Granvel Kirkland Obituary

Mr. Granvel Sidney Kirkland, 91, of Glen St. Mary, Florida passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Baptist Medical Center following a brief illness. Granvel was born and raised in Glen St. Mary to the late George "Neil" Kirkland and Beatrice Hodges Kirkland. Granvel graduated from Baker County Highschool and was accepted into Brigham Young University at 17 years old. Granvel met Margaret Alleman while they were both attending BYU. They married in the Salt Lake City Temple on September 18, 1953. Granvel graduated from BYU in June 1954 and then served three years in the United States Air Force as a missile officer assigned to guard the Matador missile. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he was accepted into the Fredric Levin College of Law at The University of Florida. While attending UF, Granvel was appointed as the Editor in Chief of the Florida Law Review. He graduated in the top of his class in 1960 and started his career practicing law in West Palm Beach, Florida. While residing in south Florida, Granvel was called to be the Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in West Palm Beach and then as Bishop of the Fort Pierce ward. He has served on the High Council and in various other callings within the LDS church. In the late 1960s, Granvel and Margaret moved back home to Baker County to raise their family. Granvel opened a law office in Macclenny, where he faithfully served the citizens of Baker County. He closed his office in 2010, after practicing law for 50 years. Granvel and Margaret had a love for bluegrass music and enjoyed traveling to music festivals all over the south. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Margaret Alleman Kirkland, sister, Lorraine (Walter) Davis, and granddaughter, Meagan Grimes. Granvel is survived by his children, Margaret Ellen Kirkland Dickson, Jared (Melinda) Kirkland, and Jonathan Kirkland: his brother, Ronnie (Janette) Kirkland: his sister, Kay Hedge Dickman and grandchildren: Pierce Kirkland, Kali Faulk, Amber Faulk, Nairn Higginson, Jacob Higginson, Makenna Dickson, and Logan Kirkland.
