Mr. Bascom Ray Akins, age 83, of Lake City, Florida passed away Tuesday, May 3, at his home. He was born in the Hildreth community of Suwannee County, Florida and had resided in North Carolina before moving to Lake City, Florida in 1968. While living in North Carolina he was employed with the Seaboard-Coastline Railroad. After moving to Lake City, Mr. Akins worked as a traffic engineer with the Florida Department of Transportation for 36 years until his retirement in 2003. Mr. Akins was a member of the U. S. Army and loved fishing, gardening and riding through his cattle on the farm. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferrell R. and Ottiest Koon Akins. He is survived by his wife, Paula Gillen Akins of Lake City, Florida; two sons, Hal (Tami) Akins of Punta Gorda, Florida and Jonathan (Laurie) Akins of Lake City, Florida; five grandchildren, Laurie Atkins, Lindsey Atkins, Jordan Akins, Austin Akins and Abigail Akins; one sister, Gwen (Lloyd) Barker of Penson, Alabama; one brother, Joe (Betty) Akins of Gainesville, Florida. A graveside funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Akins will be held at 10 A.M. Friday, May 6, in Memorial Cemetery, Lake City, Florida. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday, May 5, at GUERRY FUNERAL HOME, 2659 S.W. MAIN Blvd., Lake City, Florida
