Mr. Gerald Leo Herndon, loving father, grandfather and widower, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 10th at age 75. He was born and raised in Lake City, FL and graduated from Columbia High School in 1963. He went on to attend the University of Florida and earned a degree in Pharmacy in 1969. After graduation, he moved to Macclenny, FL where he established permanent residency in a town he loved and dedicated himself to, earning the Civilian of the Year Award in 2011. During Gerald’s first several years in Macclenny, he worked as a pharmacist for Paul’s Rexall. After retiring from pharmacy due to a deformity in his back, he started a business with his wife, Ann Herndon, who passed away in 2004. He ran Herndon’s Accounting Service for over 20 years before taking over as Chief Financial Officer at the Baker County Sheriff’s Office under incoming Sheriff Joey Dobson during his first term. Gerald retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 2012. Gerald was a veteran of the National Guard, a devoted church member of the Glen Church of Christ, a dear friend to many and a family man who loved unconditionally. His greatest passion in the world was the Florida Gators. Gerald was a Gator before anything else; so much, that some of his last words were “Let’s gooo Gators” during the FL-TN game where his beloved Gators won 31-19. Gerald is survived by his sisters, Lisa Nettles and Marie Petty and their families, his children, Todd, Tiffany, Ty and daughter-in-law Brittany, and four grandchildren, Kyler, Aiden, Phoenix and Stone. In 2004, Gerald lost the live of his life and the world was never the same. There wasn’t a day that went by that he didn’t think of or mention his late wife, Ann.
In the words of George Jones,
He said “I’ll love you til I die”,
She told him “You’ll forget in time”
As the years went slowly by,
She still preyed upon his mind.
He stopped loving her today,
They placed a wreath upon his door,
And soon they’ll carry him away,
He stopped loving her today.
