Mr. James Clarence Smith, Jr. “Sawman”, “ Jr.” passed away Monday, March 15th in the Hospice of the Golden Isles, Brunswick, GA following an extended illness. “Jr.” was born on October 10, 1933 to Gussie Combs and James Clarence Smith, Sr. in Taylor, FL. Jr. was the oldest of 3 children and graduated in 1951 from Taylor High School in Taylor, FL. He served stateside in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and was the owner and operator of Baker County Saw Shop for many years. The Baker County Saw Shop was the #1 Snapper riding mower dealer in North Florida for 8 out of 10 years from 1975-85. He loved to hunt, fish, plant in his garden (especially tomatoes) and maintain his lawn. Jr. was known for telling amazing stories and playing jokes, being an avid Gator fan and loving to spend time with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, his late wife, Lois Jean Thrift, son, James Ronald “Ronnie” Smith and sister, Lois Lyons. Jr. is survived by his wife Wanda Williams Smith: daughter in law Debby Smith of Friendswood, TX, children: Debra “Debbie” Ann Pelham (Gary) of Glen St. Mary, FL, Lois “Diane” DuBose (John) of St. Mary’s, GA: step children, Cheryl Mapp (Aubrey) of Woodbine, GA and Kevin Griffith: One Brother, Virgil Smith: grandchildren, Scott and Trish Smith of TX, Alicia ( Jason) Burroff of TX, Brett (Kellee) Pelham of FL, Jessica (Jason) Coleman of FL, Joshua DuBose of VA, Stephanie DuBose (Matt Kral) of NJ, Lindsey Mapp and Camden Mapp of GA, Sheri (Junior) Henley of AL, Kristin Duggard (Johnny) of FL, Amber Thrift (Michael) of FL and Tony Griffith ( Gabby) of FL: great grandchildren, Drew Smith, Kaleb Burroff, Elizabeth Pelham and Charlie Pelham, Patrick, Preston and Amber Coleman. Numerous step grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Jr. Smith will be held at 4 P.M., Saturday, March 20th in the Taylor Church, with Pastor Mark Woods, officiating. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 3 to 4 P.M. (one hour before services). Interment will follow the funeral services in Taylor Cemetery.
